Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors at play, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
